Pregnancy later in life has been an issue of wide concern and discussion, considering the biological and physical constitution of a female body and the risks it may pose to conception at a later stage in life. Though there is no perfect time to have children, the more delayed it gets, the greater the risks. And the reasons for doing so? Well, they can make quite a list!

Studies show that getting pregnant after the age of 35 is accompanied with major complications and interventions that may be required during pregnancy and child birth.

It has also been observed that there is low awareness about the risks and dangers of late pregnancy, fertility and the biology of conception. Many women do not possess the adequate information and hence do not take an informed decision, earlier in life. However, there are also other reasons, like where either one or both the partners do not feel ready to begin a family or there are emotional or physical complications to be taken care of.

Some of the physical considerations may be –

Fertility decreases as age progresses. The peak times are between 20 and 25 years of age, and it goes on a downward spiral from the time you hit 30.

The major reason for this is the decrease in ovulation or chances of irregular ovulation, with advancing age. Also the eggs get old with age, and may sometimes not develop properly.

There are higher chances of developing gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, vaginal bleeding during pregnancy due to placenta abruptions, premature birth or even miscarriage. The chances of having a cesarean birth are also high.

There are also chances for complications like endometriosis, in which some tissues similar to those lining the uterus, attach to the ovaries and fallopian tubes and interfere with conception.

There are chances for the baby to have low birth weight or genetic abnormalities like Down Syndrome.

The chances of having fraternal twins also becomes high for late pregnancies.

Having a pre-conception visit can be helpful to ascertain the health status, in case you are 30 and above and planning a pregnancy. Occasionally, fertility tests for both partners and genetic counseling is also advised, in order to discuss the past and present health status as well as the family health and medical history and understand any potential risks to the fetus and the mother. This also helps to mentally, physically and emotionally prepare the couple and the family for the demands and possible outcomes of pregnancy.

Late pregnancy is becoming a common trend, with many women opting for motherhood only by the time they are in their late thirties or even forties. This trend also has a personal as well as a social angle to it, with many women choosing to establish and secure themselves professionally in their careers first.

Well, though there could be complications as discussed, in the end it is a personal choice!
