What Is Pregnancy Nesting
Nesting instinct is described as the uncontrollable urge in the expectant mother to organize and get everything ready for the soon to come baby. They experience this thrill of preparing for their baby’s arrival. The common signs of nesting are obsession regarding minute details, cleanliness, different objects and their positions, even wall colors! It is a primal instinct that both pregnant and non-pregnant women go through.
Causes For The Nesting Instinct
The nesting instincts during pregnancy may be caused due to biological reasons as well as emotional factors. Most women have this primal instinct of getting everything ready for their baby so that the baby can have a comfortable life.
On the other hand, during pregnancy, the mother goes through an intense emotional experience of bonding with the yet to be born child in the womb. When combined with hormonal fluctuations which are normal during pregnancy, such feelings become even more intense leading to an obsession of getting everything right for the child.
Sings That The Mother Is Nesting
Many expectant mothers are not even aware that they are nesting. In their case, the urge may be subtle as is the case with women who are naturally active. But in case of others, there might be a sudden bubbling surge of energy making it impossible for them to be still. They may get up at 3 am to put together something they suddenly remember. Such women are aware that they are nesting. In both the cases, there are some common activities which nesting mothers indulge in.
They Are As Follows-
Moping the floor.
Cleaning the cabinets and shelves.
Keep on refurnishing the babies nursery-right from the color of the walls to the shape of the crib.
Stocking the kitchen with food.
Cleaning the bathroom continuously.
Cook different food.
Obsessed over the clothes, blankets of the baby.
Pack and repack the labor bag etc.
Precautions To Be Taken While Nesting
Pregnant women should be kept away from paint fumes. Hence the urge of repainting of the nursery should be satisfied by the partner.
Pregnant women should avoid climbing on furniture for cleaning or rearranging stuff. The risk of a fall cannot be ruled out.
Pregnant women should steer clear of cleaning the cat’s litter boxes as cat’s feces can cause toxoplasmosis.
Pregnant women can at times wear herself out by doing too many things together. Hence, taking frequent rest breaks and a good diet is a necessity.
Nesting is a very normal and safe part of pregnancy. It also denotes that the labor is near as the nesting instinct occurs a couple of weeks and at times a day before labor. The only thing to be kept in mind is that the mother should not indulge in any sort of strenuous activity.
