Clumsiness During Early Pregnancy
The wait while expecting your bundle of joy is filled with blissful anxiety and is accompanied by a fair share of clumsiness. Bumping into the same old walls, spilling food, stumbling around, feeling scatter brained and probably even tripping on one’s own feet. Every expecting mother experiences this phenomenon of feeling butter-fingered and graceless at various degrees. These symptoms are not startling considering the various transformations the body is undergoing during this phase.
The belly expands as the baby grows and more weight is transferred to the upper half of the body hence there is a shift in the center of gravity which causes loss of co-ordination, leading to clumsiness. Moreover the enlarging belly makes it difficult to see ones feet making climbing stairs difficult and stumbling easier. The scatter brain phenomena can be accounted to the hormonal changes as higher rate of sex hormones have an effect on the neurons in the brain. Memory is a brain function that usually takes place in the hippocampus and it is this region of the brain that the scientists feel is adversely affected by the circulating hormones. Hormonal changes designed to loosen the joints in the pelvis ready for childbirth can also loosen joints in your fingers and toes, making dropping things and tripping around more common. Some acts of clumsiness can also be attributed to pregnancy fatigue which is an integral part of the pregnancy phase.
Adding caution to every act is essential to combat this clumsiness syndrome. Steer clear of adventurous situations like climbing steep stairs, walking on slippery or uneven surfaces and highly risky situations like climbing ladders. Even though high heels are irresistible they are best avoided. Switching to comfortable, stable shoes which have a firm grip could help avoid risky trips. Once the belly has enlarged such that it is difficult to see ones feet, usage of support while walking or climbing stairs is advisable. Avoid hurrying to places or moving using quick paces, take your time, its wiser to avoid unnecessary jerks and falls. Turn your back on lifting heavy load. Ensure your hallway is clear of objects you may trip on and all valuable, breakable items are out of your slippery grasp.
In case you encounter a fall, your baby would be well protected by the bony pelvis and the waters that the baby floats around in but if you do fall, you should contact your doctor just to make sure everything is all right.
Many women feel extremely disoriented during their pregnancy tenure but the trick is to enjoy the feeling and not to get too stressed out. After all, a little bump here and there is worth bearing to hear the tinkling laughter of your little one.
