Precautions to take during Prenatal Yoga

Before starting a prenatal yoga program, consult your medical practitioner and also consider the following aspects before starting a routine:

  1. Inform your instructor about your pregnancy if you wish to join a class. Thus your yoga trainer will be able modify certain poses just to accommodate your body and physical condition. Though there are many video based training programs available, it is advisable to practice yoga under the supervision of a trained yoga practitioner.
  2. Be aware of the fact that though you have been practicing yoga for some time, you will not be able to continue as your pregnancy stage advances.
  3. Talk to your instructor about what poses of yoga is safe during each stage of pregnancy. Certain poses are not recommended for pregnant women, particularly abdomen twist, deep bends and inversion poses.
  4. Power yoga is not advisable during pregnancy. The intensity and increased heat due to these poses increases the internal temperature of the mother to a point which can be dangerous to the baby. You can look at these poses after the baby is born in order to lose weight gained due to pregnancy and strength gain.
