Pregnancy – Fifth Month Changes
The fifth month of pregnancy runs form week seventeen to week twenty (17-20). At twenty weeks, you have hit the mid-point of your pregnancy which is typically for forty (40) weeks.
During this period, the fetus continues to develop at an amazing pace. The muscles start developing and the the internal organs are formed and it will continue growth. Baby movements in 5th month include kicking and is essential at this stage of development. Also, the baby switches from head up to head down position frequently and it may also move from one side to the other. During the 5th month of pregnancy, the baby is beginning to have regular cycles of sleep pattern. Though the foetus is small at this stage, it would be completely formed.
Baby Development In 5th Month – Physical changes
The fifth month of pregnancy will bring about a lot of changes in the foetus. Little baby milk teeth begin forming in the gum and the pads of the fingers and toes too start forming. Baby’s unique fingerprints mature during this stage and the facial features continue to develop. Eyelashes and eyebrows start growing and at this stage, the baby’s skin is red and wrinkled. Fat starts getting stored beneath the baby’s skin. To protect the baby’s skin during its long submersion in amniotic fluid, a greasy white substance called vernix caseosa coats the entire body of the baby. Also, at this stage, the baby’s gender can be determined through an ultrasound.
Baby Development In 5th Month – Sense
The sense of touch is developed at around 17th week and by now the baby can feel its surroundings. The middle ear structure is well developed and it enables the baby to hear sound. During this stage, loud noise or sounds can startle the baby. Fifth month of pregnancy is a good time for you to start listening to music or read to your baby.
Baby Movements In 5th Month Of Pregnancy
The fetus is fully active in your uterus during the fifth month of pregnancy and you will feel the first movements of your baby as a faint fluttering. The foetus may suck its thumb and even react to noises outside the womb during the 5th month of pregnancy. At the time of an ultra sound scanning, you may even be able to see the movements of the baby. At the end of the fifth month of pregnancy your baby is approximately 10-12 inches long and will weigh about 340 gm.
Pregnancy Fifth Month Symptoms
Morning sickness disappears for most women during the fifth month of pregnancy. The most exhilarating feeling of feeling your baby move inside the womb will make all the unpleasant body changes worthwhile. At this stage, the tummy begins to bulge and weight gain increases as the fetus puts on weight. Back ache and vision blurs are quite common during the fifth month of pregnancy and to avoid these, you need to ensure that you maintain a good sleeping position. You may also experience a phenomenon called ‘pregnancy brain’; where you tend to get more absentminded.
Few of the other symptoms that you may experience during the 5th month of pregnancy are increased vaginal discharge, leg cramps at night, swelling in your ankles and increased heartburn. You will need to have a prenatal ultrasound examination conducted during the 5th month of pregnancy to understand the fetal size, activities, heartbeat and organ development in order to ensure that the baby development is normal. Make sure to continue a healthy diet; after all, the key to a healthy pregnancy is a healthy level of activity and a balanced diet.
