Second trimester is comparatively a more settled in phase as compared to the first semester which is testing for the mother and is crucial for the development of the fetus. The visits to your doctor during this time are around once or twice a month to monitor progress. This frequency is usually adequate, unless there are any chronic or acute complications or a history of medical complications, from previous pregnancy or health related problems, in which case, the frequency increases to multiple visits within a month.
The second trimester visits usually last less than an hour (with the exception of any medical complications or problems) and are mainly to monitor –
The health status of the mother
If the morning sickness is under control, any vaginal bleeding or spotting or other fluid loss, the status and progress of any previously diagnosed medical condition, in case there are any contractions and the like.
The weight gain of the mother, exercise and nutrition habits and also any other areas of concern nutrition-wise like vitamins and minerals or eating disorders.
Some check-ups also call for blood tests, urine check-up and other check-ups to rule out presence of pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes or other heath-related problems
Discussing the lifestyle of the mother, as well as her emotional, mental, social and environmental factors that may affect her health and in turn the baby’s health
Discussing results of any follow-up tests that were performed between the visits or a review of the last pre-natal visit
The progress of the baby –
Does the baby move and if the mother can feel it, how often does the baby move
Also check the development and positioning of the baby at that stage, checking the baby’s heart beats and other parameters to keep track of its progress so far
Some tests are also carried out to rule out any medical complications in the fetus
Since pregnancy is a time of questions, doubts and fears and the visits are spaced over few weeks with accessibility to your doctor not necessarily be immediately possible, remember to make notes and keep your questions ready before your visits. Also use the time to air your concerns and get them clarified. Remember to focus on the concerns and questions, and not use up time unnecessarily since there may be other mothers waiting for their appointment too!
Make sure that your spouse or partner accompanies you for these visits, to encourage participation, understanding and bonding at this stage.
Enquire about any possible tests like blood tests, urine tests or ultrasound that may be conducted during the visits and prepare accordingly. Sometimes, urine tests are carried out routinely during the visits and hence ensure that you are prepared. Use the time of your visit wisely and optimally to ensure a stress free and enjoyable pregnancy!
