During pregnancy, the mother is advised to stay away from any kind of pesticide or chemicals that might affect the baby. There are no conclusive studies or data on human pregnancy regarding roach sprays or other such pesticides. But still, as a safety measure, exposure to such pesticides for a long time is discouraged.

The Probable Risks:

During pregnancy the mother’s skin becomes very sensitive and easily reacts to any toxic chemical around. Exposure to such insecticides can be adverse to the health of the fetus too. The dangers are more prominent in the first trimesters. During the first trimester, the baby is going through the delicate stage of development of its nervous system. During this stage it is very vulnerable. Thus, if insecticides are repeatedly inhaled by the mother, they will directly attack the child’s developing nervous system thereby leading to a number of developmental defects, some of which can turn lethal. The stronger the chemical fumes of the spray inhaled, the worse will be the condition of the fetus.

Chances Of Risks From Roach/Ant Sprays:

Usually ant or roach sprays are not directly inhaled by the mother. Moreover, by the time the chemicals of the sprays get metabolized in the mother’s body and carried to the fetus via blood, it loses most of its toxicity and hence the level of harm done tends to be non-existent. But the above conditions are possible only if the mother is not coming in direct contact of these chemicals in heavy doses. In such circumstances they can be harmful as these insecticides are very poisonous and hence their fumes can do lasting damage.

Safety Measures:

During pregnancy, the child’s safety should be the prime aim of the mother. Given below are some of the safety measures one can follow regarding ant/roach sprays-

As mentioned before, the best form of precaution against the harmful effects of such sprays is to avoid them completely; at least during the pregnancy months. It is most necessary in the first trimester as the baby’s developing nervous system can be directly affected during this time.

If such sprays are to be used, the mother should stay away from that area. The rooms should be well ventilated so that the fumes of such sprays do not linger. It is also necessary to keep food away from the areas where these sprays are used. The contaminated food can do equal harm to the baby.

During pregnancy the prime goal is minimizing the exposure to toxic chemicals. Hence it is necessary to follow the directions given in the sprays. If the precautions ask the mother to stay away from the sprayed area for 2 hours, she should make it 4 hours. It is better to be safe than sorry. Thus, the bottom-line is that it is always better to completely avoid such toxic sprays during pregnancy. Nothing matters more than the child’s safety.
