Headaches and migraine are quite common during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy and pregnancy migraine  is attribute to the release of certain hormones. It has been found that about 1/6th of women get migraine for the first time during pregnancy, while others find pregnancy aggravating migraines.

Migraine can also be caused due to various factors such as intake of monosodium glutamate food, preservatives, processed meat, dry fruits, certain beans and nuts, artificial sweeteners, sour cream, buttermilk, aged cheese, fresh fruits like avocado, papaya, banana and citrus fruits, smoked fish, soy sauce and chocolates. In addition, migraine can also occur if you are exposed to glaring or flickering lights, loud noises, excessive heat or cold, strong odors, and tobacco.

Severe and frequent migraine during pregnancy can be a cause for serious concern and you will need to seek professional help. Your doctor or health care provider should be informed regarding the frequency and associated symptoms such as sudden explosive unusual headaches, stiff neck, headache with fever and blurry vision or other disturbances like drowsiness, numbness or slurred speech. This is because, doctors are very careful while prescribing migraine medication during pregnancy. Some of the migraine medication are know to contract the blood vessels in order to provide the relief. However, the effect is passed on to the foetus which could include disruption in development of the bowel or cause rupture of arteries to the spine. Therefore, you should never take medication for migraine without consulting your doctor.

Migraine During Pregnancy – Home Remedies

If you have migraine, you can get quick relief with cold showers and cold compresses. Fatigue & migraine can be avoided by sleeping adequately and with relaxation techniques such as biofeedback, meditation, yoga, self-hypnosis and massage. Avoid being hungry during pregnancy and try to eat frequent smaller meals if you have the tendency to vomit soon after eating. Avoid or reduce  eating candies and keep snacks like crackers, fruit and yogurt handy. Also, keeping your body hydrated will prevent low blood sugar and can help in preventing migraine during pregnancy.
