Is It Safe To Sit In A Vibrating Chair During Pregnancy?
Pregnancy is a hard time for any woman. The joy of carrying another life inside soon gets overshadowed by stress, aches all over the body from carrying the fetus, especially in the back and lower back along with the emotional ups and downs. During such time the idea of a vibrating chair seems to be too hard to resist. But there are conflicting views regarding the safety in using them during pregnancy. Some of the reasons why it’s not considered safe are:
- Vibrating chairs run on electricity. Thus, the electromagnetic field created by it is believed to be harmful for the developing fetus.
- Many are against the vibrating movements of the chairs. Their argument is that as one cannot control the frequency of the vibrations, it might be too much for the fetus to bear. Also the mother may feel nauseous or get sick from using them.
- Some of the chairs come with heating arrangements. Many argue that such arrangements may lead to overheating which increases the core body temperature of the mother thereby harming the fetus.
Arguments against the above are:
- The level of electromagnetic field [EMF] in a vibrating chair is low ,thus it does not harm the developing fetus .
- The heating arrangements in most of the chairs are very moderate and meant for relaxing the back. Hence, the chances of overheating are minimal.
- Advantages Of Using A Vibrating Chair
- Vibrating chairs are a good source of prenatal massage. During pregnancy the mother’s back, shoulders and lower back suffer the most. Vibrating chairs provide ample relief to these problem areas. This also results in better sleep, better circulation and lowered anxiety levels in the mother. Such prenatal massages are also known to increase the levels of serotonin and dopamine, otherwise known as the “feel good hormones” in the mother.
Points To Remember
Before opting for such chairs, it is advisable to discuss it with the doctor. They are familiar with the patient’s case history and will be able to give the perfect advice.
The levels of miscarriages are most in the first trimester. Hence, as a safety measure, it is usually recommended that vibrating chairs shouldn’t be used in the first trimester.
During the late stages of pregnancy, the belly becomes too large to fit comfortably in a chair. Hence, it is better not to exert pressure on the abdomen and opt for an alternative, like a table massage.
Vibrating chairs should be avoided completely if the mother has health complications like pregnancy induced hypertension or placental abruptions. In such cases the risk of preterm labor is high.
