Honey is packed with so many benefits that it is hard to stay away from. It is an antiseptic, antioxidant, and excellent for anaemia and weight loss.  Not only does it offer you perfect health but it is also popular across many cultures as a beauty enhancer. If you are looking for smooth, shiny hair and skin, look no further. What’s more, its delectable taste adds to its appeal. However, one common question most pregnant women have is “Can pregnant women eat honey?”

Can Pregnant Women Eat Honey?

Many people are concerned that consuming honey will harm the foetus and that it should be put on the list of food that pregnant women should stay far away from, like raw meat, raw eggs, cheese, and fish.

It is true that it is strongly advised that you keep honey away from infants under one year of age. This is because honey contains botulinum spore. It does not create havoc in adults and older children as they have a stronger and acidic digestive system. A baby’s digestive tract lacks this and this can lead to the botulinum spore growing and releasing toxins that result in food poisoning, colonization of the intestine, contamination of the blood stream, and even paralysis.

However, a pregnant woman need not worry about the botulinum spore reaching the foetus as they perish in her gastrointestinal tract, thanks to the mature and acidic environment. As it does not reach the blood stream, you don’t have to worry about the foetus being affected or while breast feeding after child birth.

Though it is safe to eat honey, it is important that you don’t compromise on the quality of the honey, as with all other food that you consume during pregnancy. Like milk, you must ensure that the honey is pasteurized. Do check the expiry date on your pot of honey. Sometimes condensation can make the honey toxic, at which point it does not matter if your digestive system is strong or not.

Busting The Myth – Can Pregnant Women Eat Honey?

  1. •To ward off morning sickness: You can take honey with ginger tea. Lemon juice, lime juice, or apple cider vinegar are other choices.
  2. •To relieve a stuffy nose: Lime juice and honey mixed in warm water are said to work wonders.
  3. •To cure heartburn: Milk and honey work together to cure heartburn. You can take a glass of this miracle combo just before going to bed.

So, can pregnant women eat honey? Well, of course. Go ahead and leave all doubts behind you and reach out for a pot of honey!
