Though most of the postpartum questions about the baby’s growth can be answered, this is one question which cannot be accurately answered!

The babies’ hair growth patterns can be varied and vastly different, with some babies being born with dense hair while others being born with scanty hair on their heads .

Moreover, all babies lose hair in the first six months, which then grow back within a couple of months to a year, by the first birthday. It is perfectly normal for the hair growth process to take a year or longer.

The interesting part is that the color, form and texture of the hair may vary during this time! These parameters also depend to some extent on the genetic composition of the baby.

The Hair Loss In The First Six Months Happens Because The Hair Growth Process Has Two Stages Growing And Resting.

When the follicles enter the resting phase, the hair usually falls out. Moreover, hormonal changes in the baby after birth affect the hair growth . It is not unusual for the baby to go completely bald at this time, until the hair starts growing back.

However excessive hair loss must be brought to the notice of your doctor, since it may signal deeper causes like nutritional deficiencies (iron) or other medical conditions like alopecia areata. Baldness at specific areas of the head may also be noticed due to continuous sleeping in a position which compresses that specific part of the scalp.

There Can Be Some Helpful Measures To Ensure Good Hair Growth –

  • Ensure that the baby gets good nutrition, since hair growth is directly dependent on the nutrition intake.
  • Gently brush your baby’s hair, or massaging the scalp with gentle circular motions ,since this will help stimulate the scalp and ensure good blood flow to the follicles
  • Using natural olive oil or standard baby oils can help stimulate the scalp and ensure good texture of the hair
  • Cutting off all the hair in an effort to enhance hair growth later is also seen in some countries.
  • Use gentle baby shampoos to wash baby’s hair on a regular basis, to keep the scalp clean.

Though hair growth may differ in babies, usually all of them experience a normal growth sooner or later.
